Punica granatum is Latin for fruit of many seeds and the root of our English word for pomegranate. The pomegranate originated in the Middle East in the area between Iran and Northern India. 

Pomegranates are rich in punicalagin which is a compound that is accountable for a majority of the pomegranate's powerful antioxidant properties. The juice from this fruit can be used to benefit the blood vessels and heart vessels and is used to help lower blood pressure. The pomegranate has been used for many other benefits as well such as lowering cholesterol levels, speeding the rate at which heart blockages are broken down, lowers the atherosxlerotic plaque in the body, and even used to lower a person's risk of stroke.

The pomegranate is also full of phytochemical compounds that are used to help stimulate estrogen and serotonin. This compound is also used to help treat depression. It has also been used to help treat type two diabetes.
