Green lipped mussel, alternatively known as Green Shell Mussel or Perna canalicula, is a mussel found on the mainland of New Zealand. The limited availability and health benefits of green lipped mussel (which has its name derived from the green tinge on the edge of its shell) has led to great popularity and interest in this supplement.

This shellfish can either be eaten in a variety of dishes or extracted as a supplement to be used for prevention of arthritis, the reduction of inflammation, improvement of the circulatory system, and improved immune function. Conditions such as lupus, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, other miscellaneous joint pain and even asthma or chronic bronchitis may be improved after consumption of green lipped mussel. These benefits are enhanced by the high levels of omega-3 fatty acids found in the mussel, which may allow the body to remain supple and rapidly repair itself. This may improve the appearance of skin, teeth, hair, and nails as well.

Green lipped mussels lose many of their health properties after being cooked, so they should only be eaten raw, as an oil extraction or used as a supplement in pill or capsule form.
